Sloclap Rematch Art Blast

Following Sifu and Absolver, Sloclap returned last June with Rematch — a new creative adventure that reimagines football through art, emotion, and action.

Rematch does not simply simulate football—it captures its very essence: a ballet of movement, observation, and precision. As the Art Director, it has been my honor to guide this vision and see it brought to life by our talented team. For such an innovative project, art could not be mere decoration—it was a fundamental pillar of our approach.

Our artistic direction was carefully shaped around our three core pillarsEmbodiment (feeling like an amazing player), Connection (belonging to a team), and Tension (feeling the pressure) — nourished by a vision that is at once Futuristic (exploring Humanity in 2065 and its challenges), Feel Good (drawing from lush nature and renewable energy), and Optimistic (evoking the beauty of impressionism, rich colors, and vibrant light).

Creating Rematch meant building a new language for football games—one that doesn’t speak of simulation or realism, but of connection. Most sports games are designed from a spectator’s perspective, where you control the whole team. We wanted to put players on the pitch, to feel what it’s like to be part of the action, to think and move with others in real time. Artistically, it was about orchestrating the rhythm of movement and animation so that every pass, sprint, and tackle felt visceral—making you feel the weight, momentum, and intensity of an athlete.

That meant reimagining everything: the camera, the controls, even the perception of space. Our “impressionist” art direction naturally followed—it had to serve this new perspective, capturing the joy of movement, the warmth of shared play, the emotion of the field.

We returned to the essence of a great match: a game of observation and positioning, action and tactics. We stripped away everything that distracted from that essence. What remained was what truly matters: five players, one ball, constant motion.

Rematch is our attempt to reimagine what a team sport can be when treated as an action game: fast, tactical, and collective—an experience made possible by our teams’ combined effort.

Our Concept Artists laid the foundation of its identity, shaping the world of 2065’s Rematch and its Positive Future aesthetic; Environment & Lighting teams brought this world to life through color, atmosphere, and bold but believable settings; Character Artists shaped the look and personality of our athletes through distinctive silhouettes, detailed clothing, and a wide range of customization options, while Rigging and Animation teams ensured that every movement felt authentic, expressive, and responsive; VFX and Sound Design teams amplified every impact, goal, and cheer with clarity and punch; and Tech and Rendering teams united it all, transforming artistic ambition into a fluid, optimized experience.

Together, they built not just a game, but a celebration of what it means to create — and to play — together.
