Quixel Derelict Corridor Art Blast – Sample Scene for Unreal Engine 5

A small group of us artists at Epic have worked hard to put together Derelict Corridor, a new free sample scene available on Fab for Unreal Engine 5.5. Derelict Corridor is mainly made with Megascans assets, and some custom artist-built assets as well.

With this project, we had a vision of producing a high quality scene that’s accessible, flexible, and easily scaled for a multitude of projects. We have made efforts to ensure that the environment runs smoothly and is relatively lightweight to make airlifting it into your project as easy as possible without sacrificing quality or artistic vision.

Derelict Corridor is built using few assets that are reused many times, which keeps the file size footprint down. For the walls, we relied on tiling and blending textures which created a high level of visual quality and variety, considering the surface is used throughout the entire scene. In addition, we also utilized tessellation for the peeling paint allowing us to achieve an even higher level of cinematic realism, and can be easily disabled to run at higher framerates.

One of the big challenges on this project was figuring out how to approach lighting. We wanted many different light sources for this environment and the only way to achieve this was with Megalights. Our goal was to showcase exterior lighting pouring into the environment as well as artificial lighting to feature bespoke details. In order to achieve a balance between our high quality visual goals and performance, Megalights became an invaluable feature allowing each of us full artistic control without worrying about performance implications.

This sample scene is the result of stellar teamwork by each person involved with the project. We are excited to present this project to you all and hope that this will provide insight, inspiration, and resources to assist you with your own projects!
