Their Story

Having travelled the globe for dream visual effects jobs in the film and television industry, the joint showreel from good friends, Andrew McDonald and Alwyn Hunt reads like a movie must-see list – think Oscar-winning Happy Feet, The Hobbit, Logan, Narnia and Harry Potter, to name just a few.

During their time working in film and television around the world, they noticed that despite a booming industry over the last 10 years and the high demand for visual effects artists, it’s really difficult to find skilled graduates. One of the main reasons for the lack of skilled students was because the curriculums schools teach don’t keep up to date with the changing technology studios use. Frustrated with seeing students knocked back, Andrew and Alwyn decided to do something about it. Open to young creatives in film, animation, games, VR, motion graphics and architecture visualization, they started a global platform and annual awards, The Rookies, and have the attention of the best studios around the world.

For students, The Rookies offers them a “stamp of approval” as they transition from school to production, enabling them to have their work seen, graded and commented on by industry heavyweights. As well as find out where they stack up against their peers. For studios and recruiters, The Rookies is the place to find outstanding emerging talent. The end goal? Launch young creatives into careers. With over 8,725 projects submitted last year alone, The Rookies is essentially becoming a recruitment tool for studios that independently reviews digital artist’s skills and connects them with studios who need great talent.

The following production studios are offering a range of fully paid internships and training programs to category winners: Weta Digital, Framestore, Method Studio, NetherRealm Studios, Monolith Productions, Rewind, Virtual Immersive, Trixter, Axis Animation, The Third Floor, Monkeystack, CVDVFX, Halon Studios, Electric Theatre Collective, Polygon Pictures, Ninja Theory, Plastic Wax, Architecture Office and Greenhaus GFX throughout Asia, Canada, Europe, Oceania, and the USA.

The official categories for 2018 are: Feature Animation, Digital Illustration, Visual Effects, Game Development, Virtual Reality, 3D Motion Graphics, Product Visualisation and Architecture Visualisation. Film of the Year (Visual Effects, 2D Animation and 3D Animation), and Game of the Year (Console and PC, Virtual Reality and Mobile).
