Featured Pro Portfolio: Luca Boni

Luca Boni is a self-taught freelance artist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. His bold shape and color choices in his paintings make every piece jump off the screen in his portfolio.

“My favorite Artstation Pro feature would have to be the custom website. As I work toward growing my portfolio, I get to have the option of really well designed and appealing themes that complement whatever I do. It’s super fun to just post a piece and see how it naturally falls into place on the website.”

Tell us about one of your most exciting projects or work experiences.

I would have to say that the most exciting project is the one that I’m currently working on. Alongside the IFCC Academy, we will be creating an in-depth and useful online course that will be out toward the end of November.

What is the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome in your career?

Pursuing a full-time career in the industry in South Africa has been tough. There are a minuscule amount of companies and studios that need full-time artists. The obstacle right now would be leaving and trying to get into the industry abroad.

What is the best art advice you’ve ever received?

I’ve been fortunate to have received a great amount of very valuable art advice but this one sticks out: in your personal work time, paint what you’re interested in because it is the fuel that drove you to be interested in painting in the first place.

How would you describe your art style?

I try not to box myself in a particular style but if I have to look back on the recent years, I would say that it’s been an exploration of offbeat worlds through simple color and shape design.
