Why Did You Decide To Enter the Dragon’s Rise Challenge?

Jean-Luc: I decided to join because I wanted my creativity to be challenged. Also because it’s the first time for a VFX category so I wanted to be part of it.

Marina: Hi there! I was really glad to see a VFX concept art category this year. As a huge fan of VFX, I thought that I couldn’t miss this chance to try new things.

Anthea: I always wanted to join, but was always timid or busy with work. It seemed intimidating to me, but this year I found out I had more time after work. I also discovered my love for VFX art and I wanted to challenge myself, while still having fun.

What Was the Inspiration Behind Your Submission?

Jean-Luc: I used various inspirations from modern sculptures and anime to define the shapes of my designs, paintings, and photos for the colors.

Marina: For me, it was D&D. So I watched the whole The Legend of Vox Machina series, then some episodes of Critical Role just to get inspiration. I usually play as a bard in RPGs, so my choice for the VFX character was obvious. And of course, my friends, who supported and inspired me this whole competition—big thanks to them!

Anthea: My inspirations were shots from anime, like Gurren Lagann or Fire Force with their intense VFX animations. At first I really wanted to make it cool and edgy. But at the time, I was playing the game Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, and it heavily inspired me with the whole D&D flair.

What Was the Most Rewarding Part of Completing the Challenge for You?

Jean-Luc: The most rewarding part was the opportunity to connect with other FX concept artists, and to see VFX artists inspired by my concepts. It is really exciting to see your work animated by other talented artists!

Marina: I was happy to try lots of ideas and just have fun. Moreover, it was great to feel all the support and cohesion of the art community during this difficult time.

Anthea: The most rewarding thing was tackling a new subject that I was uncomfortable with, and allowing myself to be playful and creative. Letting my personality fall into the piece. It’s very easy to let social media influence you with what’s good and cool.

What Advice Do You Have for Future Challenge Participants?

Jean-Luc: If you have some time, don’t hesitate to take on new challenges and be open to other domains like character design, animation, color, graphic design, etc. For me, it is the best way to get out of my comfort zone and keep myself inspired. This plays a huge part in my way of designing FX.

Marina: Don’t be scared to experiment and go beyond. And just have fun!

Anthea: I would say do it, challenge yourself! Obviously, if you have the time of course. It’s a great way of leveling up and knowing you are not alone in this. Pace yourself through it and most importantly have fun with the whole community.
