BYOA (Bring Your Own Apps) and Create 3D Worlds Together With NVIDIA Omniverse

Named one of the 100 Best Inventions of 2021 by TIME magazine and part of the NVIDIA Studio suite of creative applications, NVIDIA Omniverse is kickstarting a generational leap in 3D content creation and creative workflows.

NVIDIA Omniverse is a powerful virtual collaboration and simulation platform built to seamlessly integrate and accelerate 3D creative apps and workflows. Creators and designers can unite their assets, libraries, and creative applications within Omniverse and freely edit their assets in real time.

What sounds impossible, is now possible.

NVIDIA Omniverse replaces linear pipelines with live-sync and collaborative creation, enabling a fully integrated 3D workflow that opens up new ways to build and explore ideas faster than ever.

Take this beautifully rendered “Sol Superstar” screenshot that took three artists to create; Jim modeling the Sol character in Autodesk 3ds Max, Sara modifying and applying textures with Adobe Substance 3D Designer, and Rachel bringing all the assets into Omniverse Machinima to add effects, animation, and create a cinematic.

Traditional 3D workflows would require each artist to do their section one at a time, beginning with Jim.

Once Jim is done in 3ds Max, he’ll have to save and send his work to Sara, and wait. Sara will receive, have to convert files to a compatible Substance 3D format, work, and send back to Jim for approval. This could happen several times before Rachel gets final files, and repeats the process of converting files, reuploading and working. Not only is this tedious, but these revs and multiple files take up valuable system memory.

In Omniverse, artists can collaborate together in real time — whether between their own multi-app workflows, or between a friend working remotely in different locations and using different software applications to create physically accurate, photorealistic scenes.

Forget about having to upload, download and convert files. Omniverse leverages a universal format, Pixar’s Universal Scene Description (USD), preventing mistakes and time lost working on outdated file versions.

Let’s review some of the building blocks of NVIDIA Omniverse: Connectors and Apps.

Omniverse 101

Omniverse Connectors enable real-time collaboration in different applications simultaneously, linking popular creative applications such as Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, Adobe Photoshop, and Epic Games Unreal Engine to Omniverse, with additional support coming soon for Blender, SideFX Houdini, Maxon Cinema4D, Notch, Style3D and more.

This not only improves the efficiency of a solo artist working with these applications on a single PC by eliminating the conversion and saving of files, but opens up true real-time collaboration between remote users.

Omniverse Apps are a suite of useful tools that help accelerate creative workflows within the platform:

  • Omniverse Create accelerates advanced scene composition to interactively assemble, light, simulate, and render scenes in real-time.
  • Omniverse View enables designers and architects to collaboratively review 3D design projects in stunning photorealism.
  • Omniverse Audio2Face generates expressive facial animation from just an audio source—powered by AI and accelerated by Tensor Cores.
  • Omniverse Machinima enables RTX creators to remix and render animated stories using assets from video games with a suite of AI and RTX-powered tools.

And it doesn’t stop there — NVIDIA is adding even more Omniverse Connectors and Apps in the coming months.

Enter the Omniverse

NVIDIA Omniverse Open Beta is free and ready for download.

Participants must have an NVIDIA RTX GPU such as those powering NVIDIA Studio products.

Pro tip: new Omniverse users can soon access the Omniverse Showroom app enabling nontechnical users to experience Omniverse tech demos and experiment with real-time physics and rendering technologies.
