Velan Studios Knockout City Art Blast
Hello!
Knockout City was in development for almost four years before it launched earlier this year. During that time, it went though a few different names and visual directions, but it’s always been centered around the basic idea of throwing and catching a ball. It sounds simple, it kind of sounds dull, but if you’ve played the game, you know that it’s anything but!
This game put our art team through a massive challenge. To support the tightly designed needs of this frenetic, unrelenting experience meant continually thinking critically about how to make the world and characters feel alive and well populated without losing the focus of the competitive gameplay. Many of the more seasoned artists on this team will tell you it was one of the biggest challenges of our careers. Fortunately, we work with amazing people, and everyone stepped up and made some seemingly impossible tasks become dynamic and engaging realities.
Every part of the art in this game was designed with purpose. The style of the world materials vs. the character materials, the gameplay VFX language vs. the in-world VFX language, the animation styles, and even the flow of our hairs: it was all discussed, dissected, and made repeatable. I am, personally, enormously proud of and inspired by the level of dedication and tireless passion this team brought every day to Knockout City. We didn’t always agree on immediate solutions, but we did always work together to figure out the problems and achieve results that we could align on.
The work represented here is just a fraction of what was created over the last four years and even of what is soon to come! We hope you enjoy what we have been pouring our waking hours into and that you love the game as much as we are proud to have made it.
