Rare Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life Art Blast
As with all great adventures it started with the spark of an idea: what if the world of Pirates of the Caribbean came to the Sea Of Thieves?
In the early days of the project in 2014, we immersed ourselves in as much pirate media as we could and watching Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean films became a firm team favourite. These stories are rich with adventure and fun, so when our spark of an idea became a reality in 2020, we set sail on a new adventure. Working with Disney to bring beloved characters and moments from their world into ours has felt unreal and wondrous.
As for many in 2020, it was full of unexpected challenges. We are a team of passionate artists that love collaborating and creating together, but as we started on this new endeavour, we had to say goodbye to seeing each other every day. We had to adapt, we needed to find new ways to inspire each other. New workspaces at home were hastily created in kitchens, spare bedrooms, living rooms and even outdoors. We embraced video calls filled with muted moments, lag, and tech challenges. These calls also brought surprise appearances of pets and family members and our days were richer for it. Despite the challenge, our enthusiasm for creating fun, rich, stylised art was never dampened, and our pirate spirit kept our creative passion burning.
This passion has seen us expanded our seas like no other update before. To bring Captain Jack Sparrow into the Sea of Thieves we knew we wanted to take the players on a new epic adventure, meeting new characters, fighting new enemies, and discovering secrets new and old. We expanded below the waves with the Coral Kingdom, home to the malevolent Siren Queen and her monstrous underwater army. We took players to the Sea of the Dammed, home to lost souls and manifestations of pirate memories, including many iconic moments from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
The artwork here is just a glimpse of the work from the many talented and creative people involved in bringing this world to life. I hope when exploring it you enjoy our artistic creations. As a certain illustrious pirate once said, “Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate.”
