Hazelight Studios It Takes Two Art Blast
At the start of the production of It Takes Two, Hazelight had recently released A Way Out. As artists we had for the past 3 years predominantly worked in a realistic and gritty setting. Designing a new universe around a new IP is always going to require a lot of creativity to be able to find the direction the game needs. We started from scratch with reference hunting and some wonderful concepts, then our journey began. We all agreed we needed to create something lively, vibrant, and most importantly inviting for the players, especially in a game world that can already intimidate by scale.
The word “Pixar-esque” was thrown around a lot, with focus on scale, shape and a stylized approach but without losing the realism, using tiling textures that helped sell the various materials in the world.
“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”.
We could tell from the start that performance and visual clarity could make or break players’ adventures. But at the same time we had to balance this with making sure to create a rich world that would invite exploration and create an itch for the players’ curiosity. The product that came out of this process is a testament to our team’s hard work and perseverance but also to the immense fun we had making the game, just as we hope the players will have when they experience it.
