Paul Chadeisson is a Freelance Illustrator and Concept Artist who works in games and film. His resume boasts titles like Blade Runner 2049: Black Out 2022, The Surge, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Alien 5, Final Fantasy XV, and Tron: Uprising. Choosing the ArtStation Pro Bombastic theme allows him to give his large scale industrial environment illustrations a jaw dropping full screen showcase.
With his years of experience in the industry, Paul shares some valuable tidbits on learning through his challenges, looking for inspiration and more.
What was one of your biggest challenges in the industry?
I think creating an indie game company with a very small team was one of the biggest and hardest challenges I’ve ever had in my life. You are not just doing art, you are also taking care of everything else – from finding a game idea to finding the right people to work with, learning 3D, level design, FX, UI design, balancing the game and improving the gameplay, doing the marketing and talking with the press (never easy when yo
u come from an art background), all to finally release the game.
It was a very exciting experience and great opportunity to experiment and push an art direction. As a freelance artist now, it definitely helped me a lot.
Where do you go to find inspiration?
I used to visit a lot of abandoned places like power plants, blast furnaces, slums and medieval places. I am very fascinated by the amazing things humans can build and forget when it’s not profitable anymore. Now, I don’t have time to travel unfortunately, but I look at a lot industrial stuff like shipyards, oil rigs, etc.
Tell us about one of your favorite projects or artworks.
Working on Blade Runner 2049: Black Out 2022 with director Shin’ichirō Watanabe was one of the most favorite experiences. I could not thank him and his team enough for bringing me onto the project.
As a big fan of the Ridley Scott BladeRunner movie, it was a real honor and pleasure to be part of this universe. I was given total freedom from start to the end and was able to really push what I love while trying to stay as close as possible to the original movie. My work has always been very influenced by BladeRunner, so it’s kind of a dream come true and homage to be part of this project!
“Keep doing personal work. From when you just start creating art to any moment in your career, it will always be relevant. At the beginning, you don’t necessarily have motivation or ideas about what to work on, but just by practicing, everything comes together. It just takes time. But, you start having ideas and things to improve, and just by practicing it get more and more fun!
