Supermassive Games The Devil in Me Art Blast
Welcome to this Art Blast celebrating the art of The Devil in Me, the fourth and final instalment of season one of The Dark Pictures Anthology.
It’s the story of a documentary crew who are contacted by a mysterious benefactor called Granthem Du’Met. He invites them to a replica of the ‘Murder Castle’ built by H.H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer. The crew soon discover that they’re being watched, and even manipulated, and that Mr Du’Met has a very sinister purpose for inviting them.
To make the Hotel feel authentic we did extensive research into the original ‘Murder Castle’ of H.H. Holmes, then blended the architectural style of the 1890’s with the present day to create a visually compelling world for the player to explore.
Part of this blending of the old and new was creating the theatrical traps that Du’Met uses to kill off his guests one by one. We had to imagine what might spring from the mind of a sadistic and murderous but also highly intelligent and methodical killer.
The designs included the use of mannequins, medical equipment and very theatrical lighting.
We also used colour saturation and temperature to help set the visual tone at moments of peril and for key cinematic sequences, especially those involving death traps.
This project was a truly collaborative experience, and the visual identity of the game came from every member of the art team. For that we want to thank all the fantastic artists who have helped make this game possible.
