Be a Part of The Art Department’s Hybrid Edition – Artist talks, Expo and More!

Willeke Machiels / willekemachiels.com

Following the success of the first online edition of The Art Department last spring with 30,000 unique viewers, the organizer, Playgrounds, sets out for yet another adventure. With Covid19 regulations in The Netherland allowing small events to take place, they’ve seized the opportunity to create a hybrid version of the festival.

Prepare for an extensive program of artist talks about concept art and design with some of the biggest productions in the world, as well as in-depth technical sessions to uplift your skills. A limited number of visitors will be welcomed at the industrial venue, Klokgebouw in the city of Eindhoven, and at the same time international audiences can watch free live streams of the festival.

“Due to the Corona crisis, we had to cancel our festival in the spring. We immediately switched to an online festival, because we wanted to give something back to all artists and filmmakers who are also affected by this crisis. And it did so much for us. We really felt connected to artists in all corners of the world. So for this hybrid edition we are happy to meet artists and creatives in person again, but also to connect to the rest of the world online. Featuring top notch speakers, demos, slow tv, a talent stage and freestyle rap. A shout out to the creative industry!” – Director and curator Leon van Rooij

Program Highlights:

Online Interview with Carter Goodrich

lllustrator for sixteen New Yorker magazine covers, character designer for Despicable Me, Finding Nemo, Brave, Shrek and Ratatouille among others, illustrator and writer of children books for which he was twice been awarded the gold medal from the Society of Illustrators – Carter Goodrich will join The Art Department in an online interview.

Online Artist Talk with Gustav Hoegen

Creature effects artist specializing in animatronics, Gustav Hoegen worked on numerous films including: Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Ex Machina and Ridley Scott’s Prometheus to name a few. In 2013, Gustav Hoegen and Neal Scanlan were approached to run the Creature Effects department for the new Star Wars trilogy and spin off movies.

Online Artist Talk with Izzy Burton

Illustrator, animator, director, concept artist and story-teller – stunning everybody with her highly recognizable use of colour and whimsical ideas in her works for Netflix Animation, Passion Pictures, Blue Zoo Animation and Bright Agency, Izzy Burton has skillfully managed to master a dreamy yet vibrant aesthetic. Izzy will do an online talk at the hybrid edition of The Art Department.

You can be featured at The Art Department!

Since this year’s hybrid version of The Art Department only allows Playgrounds to meet a limited number of artists and creatives, they thought of a way that they can reach out to you and have a look at what you are up to!

Playgrounds is looking for time-lapse videos of you sketching. Because it is all about the process, for this part of the expo Playgrounds has teamed up with ArtStation!  ArtStation gives artists the opportunity to breakdown their process and gives room for not only the end results, but also the art of sketching and experimentation, with the brand new Sketches Channel.
