Syn Studio, Montreal is now accepting applications for the Fall 2018 intake of its elite Concept Art Diploma Program.The Advance Portfolio Review deadline for this intake is on November 2, 2017 and you can start your application process here.

The 18 month intensive program, launched in October 2016, is targeted towards aspiring concept artists who already possess strong fundamentals and wish to learn more advanced techniques. The cutting edge curriculum, with its courses, projects and assignments are designed in line with the current demands of the fast paced and exacting entertainment industry. The teachers in the program, who are senior concept artists and art directors in AAA video games and film, will be guiding in the students towards achieving their goal of becoming kick ass concept artists with a stunning portfolio. The teachers in the program are senior concept artists and art directors in AAA video games and film who will be guiding in the students towards achieving their goal of becoming kick ass concept artists with a stunning portfolio.  To complement the in-class learning and assignments, Syn Studio regularly organizes events such as art jams and themed figure drawing workshops, industry visits, masterclasses with world-famous concept artists and panel talks. These activities help the students build valuable connections, improve their processes with valuable feedback, learn the latest techniques and become competitive so they can succeed in this fast paced industry.

The students in the program are provided with the latest state of the art equipment, which includes the high speed ASUS ROG gaming laptop and WACOM Intuos 5 tablet, to help them during their artistic journey.

Here are some profiles of instructors teaching in the Concept Art Diploma Program over the next 6 months:

Thierry Doizon

Thierry Doizon aka Barontieri is a former Senior Concept Artist and Art Director with over 20 years of industry experience, having worked around the globe for companies such as Square Enix, Ubisoft, Disney Interactive and Eidos. Thierry has taught at the college level and been a speaker at various workshops and conferences such Disney Imagineering, ADAPT, Ubisoft Campus, MIGS, FIEA, Massive Black and The Gnomon Workshop, for whom he has also released an instructional DVD (Character Design Pipeline: Production Art & Research Techniques with BARONTiERi). Thierry’s other credits include Lara Croft GO, Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, Deus Ex: Human Revolutions and Tron: Legacy, among others. His work has been featured in “Exodyssey: Visual Development of an Epic Adventure” and “Steampainting: SPARK – Creative process”, both by Steambot Studios, which he co-founded.


Remko Troost

Remko Troost has over 15 years of industry experience and is currently a Senior Concept Artist at Ubisoft Montreal. His designs appear in numerous AAA titles such as Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed Unity. His expertise in digital painting and concept art has been recognized with numerous awards and his work has been featured in prestigious art publications from Ballistic Publishing, Titan Books, Imagine FX, 2dartist magazine and Computer Arts. His is also an experienced and passionate instructor and we’re excited to have him on the Syn Studio team!

Donglu Yu

Donglu Yu is a senior concept artist working at Warner Bros. Games Montreal. She’s contributed to four titles in the Assassin’s Creed universe as well as Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Donglu has been widely recognized for her outstanding contribution to her field and has won awards from such publications as: Expose 7 through 11, Digital Art Masters Volume 08, Exotique 5 and 6, ImagineFX, 2dartist Magazine, Prime, Advanced Photoshop and D’artiste

Fred Rambaud

Fred Rambaud is an art director, concept artist and illustrator with over 10 years of freelance and in-house experience in the entertainment industry for a number of companies around the world. During his career, he has worked on a lot of high profile games such as Far Cry 4, Spiderman, Secret World and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, among others. He has also worked on creating production art for comic covers, comic interiors, card games and illustrations for stage shows such as Toruk for Cirque du Soleil. Fred currently works as an Art Director at Gearbox Studio in Quebec, Canada in addition to continuing his freelance concept art and illustration work.


Raphael Lacoste

Raphael Lacoste is currently brand art director for Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise. His credits also include, as art director: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Two Thrones and The Warrior Within and as matte painter or senior concept artist: Terminator Salvation, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Death Race, Immortals, Repo Men and Jupiter Ascending. In addition, Raphael has won a Visual Effects Society award for his work as Art Director on Prince of Persia the Two Thrones cinematics and is also a popular and experienced teacher.

Jason Tonks

Jason Tonks is a concept and 3D artist with over 10 years of industry experience for companies such as Warner Brother Games and Ubisoft. During his career, Jason has worked on many high profile AAA games such as Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Injustice 2, Batman: Arkham Origins and Splinter Cell: Blacklist and is currently working at Bethesda Studios on a top secret AAA game. In addition to this, Jason was also a mentor at the National School of Interactive Entertainment for a year where he helped aspiring game artists in their artistic journey.

Grant Hillier

Grant is a senior concept artist at Ubisoft where he creates character and environment concepts for various high profile games including Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, The Division and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. A veteran artist with close to 15 years of freelance and industry experience, Grant’s other credits include generating storyboards for the animated TV show Delilah & Julius, creating concept art for videogames such as Age of Decadence and F.E.A.R 3, in addition to conducting a workshop with ImagineFX magazine.

Brian Sum

Brian Sum is a senior concept artist at Bioware, Montreal. He possesses almost 15 years of industry experience having worked on many high profile games such as Mass Effect 2 and 3, Dragon Age Origins, Sonic Chronicles and Shadowrun. Brian is well known for his colourful, detailed and fresh robot designs and has had his artwork featured in several publications such as Imagine FX Magazine, 2dartist Magazine, Prime Digital Art Collection, Digital Art Masters – Volume 8 and Digital Painting Techniques – Volume 5.


Nick Oroc

Nick Oroc is a senior concept artist at Ubisoft, Montreal. His credits include: Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Rainbow Six (Lockdown, Vegas, Siege and more), Splinter Cell (Conviction and Blacklist), Assassin’s Creed: Project Legacy, Far Cry Primal and Child of Light. Prior to this, Nick worked as a senior concept artist at Behaviour Interactive, where was involved in games such as WET, Iron Man and Rango. His artwork and tutorials have been published several times in 2dartist magazine and he has been a guest speaker at two Adapt Conferences (2008 and 2009). In addition to this, Nick was also a guest artist at the The Art of Games exhibition in Aosta, Italy and is an experienced teacher.
