Amazon Games New World Art Blast
We are excited and honored to share the New World Art Blast!
When the art team started our expedition to define the look and feel of New World; we knew we wanted to capture a sense of exploration and mystery for players. We wanted a world that felt grounded in real history but also served as a jumping off point into the fantastical. We latched on to the idea of a vast immersive haunted Eden to explore. Everything players encountered had to feel exaggerated and dramatic yet still believable; offering a sense of the familiar but also of otherness. Aeternum is a land borne from our shared history, our folktales, myths and legends both terrifying and inspiring brought to life. Terrors and cosmic horrors that frighten you in the night, majestic creatures you’ve only dreamed of, scholarly theory bordering into magic all made manifest in this place.
Beyond just historical accuracy, we sought to bring to life how it would have felt living on a supernatural island caught in a cycle of death and rebirth. It was important to us that we stay true and celebrate what made each culture unique, while also exploring how they might have evolved and adapted to the supernatural dangers they faced. We liked the idea that each culture brought their nightmares and beliefs with them; that the island reflected their folklore back so each would interpret the world a little differently. Adding a splash of cosmic horror felt like the perfect visual underpinning taking many forms to tie all the various terrors of Aeternum together. So, we landed on a lush supernatural world full of contrast, beauty and horror.
Over the course of development, we had to learn to adapt as well; finding new ways to collaborate and be inspired by each other’s art from afar during a global pandemic. Somehow, we managed to chart a course and the passion the team channeled into their art has been humbling. The artwork below is a fraction of the effort involved but gives a sense of the voyage the art team undertook in bringing Aeternum to life.
