The Art of Rival: Crimson x Chaos with Section Studios
Legendary videogame concept artist, Cecil Kim, will lead an exclusive event at Gnomon School in Hollywood on Saturday, April 14th, revealing the conception and development of Section Studios’ Rival: Crimson x Chaos strategy battle game. Cecil (Chief Creative Officer, Section Studios) will be joined at the Gnomon Stage by Katon Callaway (Game Director), David Viola (Lead Artist), Kristopher Vita (Character Artist), and Daniel Johnson (Character Artist) to share with us the making of Rival: Crimson x Chaos, including a look at the character art from concept to completion, rapid texture creation for the game’s characters, weapons, and towers, as well as the design and creation of the Rival arena environment.
Rival: Crimson x Chaos is designed for mobile, hitting screens everywhere on April 5th, 2018. Guest Speakers
Cecil Kim—Chief Creative Officer, Section Studios
Over two decades, Cecil Kim’s career as a concept artist and lead artist spanned Final Fantasy IX, Parasite Eve, God of War 1, 2, and 3, and God of War: Ascension. He even won a Best Artistic Achievement BAFTA video game award for his work as Visual Development Lead on God of War 3. Cecil is one of the founders of Section Studios, established in 2011, and additionally serves as an Advisory Board member for Gnomon School in Hollywood.
Katon Callaway—Game Director, Section Studios
Katon Callaway began his journey 14 years ago when he left Colorado to pursue his dream in game development. Since then, he’s worked for Activision, Santa Monica Studio, and DICE LA, and is best known for his character work on the God of War series. Currently, he is embarking on a new journey as Game Director for Rival: Crimson x Chaos at Section Studios. You can also find him sculpting and painting creatures from time to time – just for fun!
David Viola—Lead Artist, Section Studio
David Viola was born in New Jersey and went to school in Brooklyn before launching his career at Viacom/MTV as a flash animator, making Facebook games. Eventually, he moved over to the Nickelodeon Games team where he was transferred to Los Angeles to work on the Monkey Quest MMO. David joined Section Studios in 2015, where he now leads 3D art for the game studio.
Kristopher Vita—Character Artist, Section Studios
Born and raised in the Philippines, Kristopher Vita moved to the US to pursue a career in the arts. He has been working in the video game industry for seven years as a 3D character artist. He was formerly at Float Hybrid Entertainment and nWay Games, before finding his way to Section Studios in Los Angeles. In his spare time, he accumulates many chicken dinners from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
Daniel Johnson—Character Artist, Section Studios
Daniel Johnson is a Gnomon alum who began his work with Section Studios shortly after graduating from Gnomon School in Hollywood. His artistic education and flexibility enabled him to work across many of Section’s projects, including the award-winning title Eclipse: Edge of Light, and now Rival: Crimson X Chaos, as both a character and environment artist.
