The Gnomon Workshop ships Character Concept Design

The Gnomon Workshop has released Character Concept Design, a new three-hour training video exploring how Weta Workshop senior concept designer Johnny Fraser-Allen tackles a real client brief.

In the video, Fraser-Allen creates a pirate character for use as the basis for a real costume for a fundraising event Weta hosts for local charity The Neonatal Trust.

Practical techniques and design feedback
As well as setting out Fraser-Allen’s Photoshop techniques, beginning with a base photo and painting character elements in layers to quickly generate a variety of designs, the video sees him incorporating feedback from Workshop co-founder Richard Taylor to deliver a final approved image.

It’s an unusual insight both into practical concept art techniques and real-world working practices.

The video is available as a direct download from Gnomon’s online store, price $59; and you can see more images from the project in Fraser-Allen’s ArtStation gallery.
